Congratulations to Dr. Shixia Huang (PI) and the BRITE program for securing the NIHR25 (SEPA, NIH and NIGMS), which provides $1,250,000 in funding over five years (2024-2029) for the BRITE teacher’s training program.

ÔÚÏߺÚÁÏÃÅ BRITE: BRITE teachers training program provides biotechnology research hands-on training opportunities for middle and high school teachers. The teachers work with scientists side-by-side for three weeks in the Advanced Technology Cores at ÔÚÏߺÚÁÏÃÅ and the program engages scientist educators and STEMM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics and medicine) specialists to help teachers translate real-world research and science experiences into their classroom lessons. The program was extended to provide trainings for high school students.

BRITE Program History
BRITE teacher’s training pilot program was launched in 2022, with support from the Huffington Department of Education, Innovation, and Technology (EIT) at ÔÚÏߺÚÁÏÃÅ (BCM.) The program then earned an award of $50,000 grant by the Huffington Foundation through the Department of EIT for its 2023 summer program. The trainings are mainly conducted at the Advanced Technology Cores at ÔÚÏߺÚÁÏÃÅ. BRITE 2024 summer Teacher’s Training pilot program was supported by the Lester and Sue Smith Breast Center at ÔÚÏߺÚÁÏÃÅ and the at the University of Texas Medical Branch. Starting in July 2024, the BRITE teacher training program will be supported by the NIHR25 Science Education Partnership Award (SEPA). This funding will enable the program to train 12-16 middle school teachers annually.

C-REP is part of the NIHP20 BCM/TSU Collaborative Union for Cancer Research, Education and Disparities (CURED) program. Dr. Rayne Rouce is the BCM principal investigator, and Dr. Shixia Huang is the BCM C-REP leader. This program has an . Dr. Veronica Ajewole is the TSU principal investigator and Dr. Huan Xie is the TSU C-REP leader. Drs. Debra Murray (BCM) and Flora Estes (TSU) are co-leaders of CREP program.
